Whether you work full-time, freelance, or stay at home, being a mom is undeniably one of the hardest jobs in the world. And while spending time with our kids is amazing, even the most dedicated parents need—nay, deserve—a break from time to time.
The problem? When you’ve got work, kids’ appointments, school, extra-curricular activities, and maintaining a home to take care of, moms tend to have virtually zero time to themselves. Fortunately, finding some well-deserved time for yourself without feeling the crushing weight of mom guilt may be easier than you think.

Parenting means always being on the lookout for ways to save money, whether that means signing up for discount cards or looking to other parents for childcare. Fortunately, many cities and towns have parenting swap groups where another local mom will watch your kid for free for a few hours with the expectation that you’ll return the favor at some point. And voila! Instant alone time without dropping a penny.
Schedule Alone Time as a Mom: Tip #2 Take a personal day
While many employees are loath to use their personal or vacation days for anything other than absolute necessities, taking a day off when your kids are in school or are being babysit can give you the downtime you need to finally get that massage, manicure, or just run the errands you’ve been getting behind on.
Schedule Alone Time as a Mom: Tip #3 Hire a mother’s helper
Although babysitters can cost a bundle, mother’s helpers, who usually watch your kids when you’re in the house, can be a lifesaver. For significantly less than a traditional babysitter, you’ll get childcare while you get to have some solo time at home to catch up on reading, Netflix, or just get some of that sleep you’ve been missing out on.
Schedule Alone Time as a Mom: Tip #4 Find a drop-off daycare
Not every daycare requires kids to attend every week or even every month. If you have a drop-in daycare in your area, sign your kids up for a day from time to time so you can take a break for yourself.
Schedule Alone Time as a Mom: Tip #5 Have a friend lend a hand once the kids are in bed
If you’ve got a trusted friend who lives nearby, go ahead and ask them to hang out at your house when your kids are in bed and hit the town. Leave some snacks, give them access to your streaming services or TV, and, of course, offer to do the same for them in the future.
Just because you have kids doesn’t mean the days of spending leisurely time alone are over. With a little ingenuity, you can get that much-needed alone time when you need it, making you a better, more patient parent along the way.
