Why Weighted Compression Vests for Autism are Trending
When it comes to special needs such as Autism, ADHD, and Sensory issues, it seems like there are so many options to select from for tools. Having three autistic children, I can honestly say we have tried most of them. One of my favorite tools for deep pressure therapy and calming are weighted compression vests for autism. That’s why I am publishing this Harkla weighted compression vest review.
We have tried a couple of different versions of weighted compression vests over the years and seen several through therapies and schools. They all have the same concept and basic design. Thick material that Velcro’s snuggly against the child and has a little bean-like weight to put in the pockets accordingly.
I have worked with Harkla before, so when they offered to send one of our children a weighted vest to check out (and keep), I was honestly excited. We had tried a weighted vest with our son before, so I just knew our youngest daughter would benefit greatly from it. As a brand, I love Harkla. They only produce products for special needs children and are always sharing information to help our communities.
What are Weighted Compression Vests?
Weighted vests are such a fantastic tool for sensory seeking children. All I can describe it as is receiving a big hug constantly. It is deep pressure that soothes and provides such a sense of calm. Weighted blankets are so popular these days, and if you’ve tried one, it’s easy to see why!
Deep touch pressure therapy (DTP) is a firm tactile sensory input that provides the individual that much needed proprioceptive input throughout the body. Weighted blankets are fantastic at delivering this but are very heavy and not suitable for on the go.
Weighted compression vests are the perfect tool for on the go. They can be used as compression-only, or you can use the removable weights to provide weight. These are little bean bags that way anywhere from a ½ pound each to 1 pound each.
Harkla Weighted Compression Vest Review
As for this weighted compression vest, I can say I was shocked when we received it in the mail. It came in a box that was so compact! We have used weighted vest before, and though they are small when folded, this was even smaller.
Upon opening it up, I could see why. The Harkla Weighted Compression Vest is made from a lightweight, breathable material with mesh throughout. Every vest we have used previously were made of very thick material. While this does provide compression, it also makes the kids sweaty! Once they are sweaty, they don’t want to wear them anymore. So, to have one that avoided that all together, well that left me so impressed!
The other great thing I noticed was that the weights provided were smaller in size. Though they are the same weights, they were square in design versus the long tubes of most other vests. This made it so much more comfortable for my daughter.
Durability is Key
The final thing that sold me on this vest is its durability. My children are rough on, well everything! The Harkla Weighted Compression vest has managed to withstand the test of my kids! What makes it even better, even if they managed to damage it somehow, it comes with a lifetime guarantee! All you have to do is register your warranty on their website, and that’s it!
The only downside I could say about the vest would be the price point. The Harkla weighted compression vest comes in between $62.99-$69.99 (according to sale price). This is an average of $10-$20 over most other vests. That being said, I truly believe the price difference is worth it. For my children, I’d rather pay $20 more for an item they will use instead of $20 less for something they will use 1 or 2 times only.
What we thought
For our daughter, the evidence of the benefit is so clear! She willing puts it on and even asks for it often. Having a tool, she is happy to use it correctly! Any time we can provide her the resources she needs and make her happy, my heart is more than full!
So, if you are considering purchasing one, the Harkla Weighted Compression Vest is the way to go! It is the perfect solution for sensory seekers. The ideal solution for portable DPT for those with autism, ADHD, spd, or any other sensory needs!
